Krishnarpan – a Journey through Nepal’s Culture

I love trying out new food, especially in different countries. Being vegetarian was easy for me in Nepal with all the variety of vegetarian dishes.

I had a solo celebration evening at Krishnarpan restaurant at the Dwarika Hotel celebrating my journey to Everest Base Camp. Krishnarpan is an experience, from entering the courtyard to exiting the restaurant with your handmade terracotta brick as a keepsake. The food is a slow-dining experience with various course offerings. The menu takes you on a traditional gastronomic experience, all barefoot.

Krishnarpan, which means offering to Lord Krishna, truly takes you on a food journey where all the dishes are organically sourced and have been inspired by Nepal’s diverse culinary cultures. Each dish was inspired by a particular region or community of Nepal.

My evening started off with pre-drinks at the pool, enjoying a great cocktail and relaxing ambiance before my Nepalese food adventure started.

After a warm welcome, I received a beautifully deep red printed menu with all the meals I was going to be enjoying throughout the evening. The most lovely special touch, it was printed with my name and date of my solo celebration.

I opted for the six course and the menu consisted out of the following:
* Newari meal Samaya Bajee (assortment of Hors D’Oeuvres served during religious ceremonies)
* Chyau Ko Sekuwa (roasted mushroom), Puri (deep-fried soft fine flour bread) and Chana ko Tarkari (chickpeas curry)
* Veg Mo-Mo (traditional Nepali style minced vegetable dumpling)
* Tarkari Ko-Jhol (mixed vegetable soup)

Let’s call this the main:
*Sada Bhuja (organic steamed rice)
* Dal Jhaneko (organic lentil flash fried with Himalayan herbs)
* Paneer Ko Tarkari (cottage cheese curry)
* Saag Jhaneko (sauteed organic spinach with Nepali spices)
* Kauli Ra Kerau Ko Tarkari (stir- fried cauliflower and green peas)
* Aloo Ra Bodi Ko Tarkari (stir-fried potato and bean curry)
* Mula Ko Achar (radish pickle)
* Lapsi Ko Achar (homemade hug-plum pickle)

Dessert – Sikarni (yoghurt flavoured with cinnamon sweetened honey) and Pharsee Ko Haluwa (Nepali pumpkin pudding)

Astamangals are the 8 lucky signs of Nepalese iconography and the evening was rounded off with a terracotta keepsake brick. My brick had a lotus on which is a sign of purity and a pledge of salvation.

WOW! What an experience and end to a life changing experience. Another memory that will last a lifetime.
